The wonderful pictures of Jane Bowles languishing at Hotel Chelsea have been pulled from this site.
The reason that you'll no longer be able to see the pictures is easily summarised--- a self-important prat has DEMANDED that they be removed.
Read on and be amused at how bloody seriously some people take themselves. I especially like the totally irrelevant "I live in Jane Bowles's [sic] apartment". Perhaps this is meant to be a 'credential'? It sets a strange precedent in this context. By the running logic I could become a self-appointed protector of Dee Dee's copyright--- everybody at Hotel Chelsea could appoint themselves agents of the copyright police.
I forwarded this to a lawyer buddy in Seattle. His advice is that I am probably protected under 'fair use' and he has offered to have someone more expert in copyright at the firm take a look. It may yet emerge that the Bowles estate will get a kind but firm letter. I no longer tolerate bullies, I pursue them to the end of the earth.
Unfortunately, the time consumed by dealing with Kenneth Lisenbee was intended to be used to write an 'On This Day'. Unless my day goes better than expected I shall have to dip out on that one again. Today is busy enough to be working to very literal schedule, all scribbled in list form to cross off by priority. A few of those loose ends are destined to result in some new things here so not all is lost.
I wonder what Jane and Paul Bowles would think of this kind of nonsense going on in their name? Any real advocate for Jane Bowles should surely be glad to have her in the spotlight. OR- what has been gained out of this transaction...?

Subject: Unauthorized use of two photographs of Jane Bowles at the Chelsea Hotel
New York City
January 23, 2006
Dear Carrie,
You have an interesting site but unfortunately you have copied two photographs of Jane Bowles from our site and put them on two pages of your own blog/site, without so much as any credit to the source: http://twentythirdandseventh.typepad.com/twenty_third_seventh/2005/week52/
and
http://twentythirdandseventh.typepad.com/twenty_third_seventh/hotel_chelsea/index.html
This copying and reuse of our photographs is specifically prohibited in the terms and conditions of use. We ask that you remove the photographs and make a link to our page instead. Worse of all, you have enabled others to copy these images, which is also not permitted. You need to respect the rights and ownership of others and stop this practice.
I live in Jane Bowles's apartment in Tangier, Morocco, where I still live half of each year when not in Manhattan.
Thank you for correcting this matter. Please e-mail me when you have done this or if you have any further questions.
Kenneth Lisenbee
